Marty Burke's early 1940s Calgary Stampeders hockey team leather jacket is offered in this lot from the late NHL defenseman's family, which also includes his vintage late-1940s CCM game-used hockey stick. Burke, who won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Canadiens in 1930 and 1931, coached the hockey Stampeders from 1939-42 and again for the last two seasons of the 1940s. His Stampeders team jacket in faded but soft and supple red leather most likely dates from 1940-41. That was the season after Burke's Western Canada Senior Champion Stampeders went to the Allan Cup final at Maple Leaf Gardens, only to lose to Bill Durnan and the Kirkland Lake Blue Devils in three straight. Glorious felt patches on both breasts include the team crest in red and white on the left, and a fabulous "39-40 Calgary Stampeders, West. Canada Sr. Hockey Champions" crest on the right. The cuffs, collar and hem have still-vibrant red, white and blue stripes. There are some stains to note, mostly on the cream leather on the top of the sleeves, upper back and pocket flaps. "Marty Burke" is spelled out in white thread stitched on a black patch sewn inside the left hem. "The S&C Brand, Calgary, Alta" manufacturer's label remains in the back of the neck with what appears to be the remnants of a white flag tag at the bottom. Marty was listed at 5-foot-8, 160 lbs., and though no size is indicated, a small appears most likely. The solid, crack-free stick has been beautifully preserved with its original tape jobs. This lot comes with an LOA from the family of Marty Burke. Marty Burke’s CCM stick retains both of its original tape jobs on the blade and knob, the latter of which moves. There is wear through part of the bottom of the tape job on the blade, which is crack-free with only a bit of separation in the wood at the heel where the blade is slotted into the bottom of the shaft. “E22 LEFT” and “4” are stamped on the front of the shaft and there is an illegible inscription on the back below the knob. There are two tiny nail holes through the shaft.
