In 1992, goaltender Vancouver Canucks Kirk McLean led the NHL in wins with 38, and shutouts, with 5. Just two years later he backstopped the Canucks all the way to the Stanley Cup finals, but Vancouver was beaten by the New York Rangers in a memorable seven-game series. Not many remember that it was McLean in net when Wayne Gretzky scored his milestone 802nd NHL goal, breaking the mark previously held by Gordie Howe. Kirk spent his final two seasons in New York as a member of the Rangers, Marvelous Kirk McLean game worn goalie mask dates back to the 1999-2001 era when Kirk was roaming the crease in New York City for the Rangers. The design is in silver, red and blue and features the torch of the Statue of Liberty on one side and the pinnacle of the Empire State Building at the other. Made by Greg Harrison, the mask sports his company logo on the inside where all interior padding is intact and shows heavy wear with some rusting to the hardware. The painted backplate sports a tiny NYR Skate logo and all straps are intact. Famed mask maker and decorator Greg Harrison has signed inside the mask in silver paint pen ink, adding the year "99" and "for Kirk McLean, New York Tartan" (the design). Loads of game use on this example with dozens of tiny marks, slashes and paint chips, especially at the edges. McLean's mask is conclusively photo-matched to a small chip in paint just above bar cage, a small scratch in paint just above W of New York on chin and another small mark/scratch at the lower extreme left of the triangle left of New York with two small dots in the paint just to the left. A digital image of the photograph used for the match work will accompany the lot. Spectacular!
