The signature of the man who donated the Stanley Cup is always intriguing and coveted but when it is accompanied by a letter or note written by Frederick Arthur Stanley, well, the level and importance of the prize possession indeed escalates substantially. On Government House, Ottawa letterhead and dated December 12, 1891, (at a time when Stanley was Governor General of Canada), Stanley writes "Private: Dear Sir: I must thank you very sincerely for your kindness in asking my son to your house, and for your goodness in looking after him when he was passing through N.Y. a few days ago. It made all the difference in the world to him, and his is very grateful to you, as are also Lady Stanley and myself." Page two of the four-page affair is signed "I remain, Yours very faithfully, Stanley of Preston." Measuring just under 4-1/2" by 7" and folded once to presumably fit into a small envelope, the letter features bold fountain pen penmanship and is awaiting its new appreciative home. We wonder which of the Stanley boys had travelled through New York and who received him? Oh, the unanswered questions that will remain with this cherished piece!
