Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
Line up this wood “bandy” stick from the dawn of the 20th century next to a modern composite hockey stick and it’s not hard to envision the game’s development over the course of its long and storied history. With obvious nods to the Irish sport of hurling, this stick was used to play bandy, which was popular from the late 1800s into the outset of the 1900s as a predecessor to the modern game of ice hockey. This bandy stick’s shaft bears more than a passing resemblance to a wooden axe handle, right down to the curved edge of the butt end of the stick. This one-piece stick measures 35 1/2" from top to toe. Its wood has a sun-bleached look and there are groupings of tiny holes to note. The blade shows wear with a 2-inch long chip cracked off the top edge of the toe, and various smaller chips along the bottom edge. A great hockey artifact dating from the game’s very origins.
