Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
Nice collection of three vintage pictures featuring images of Lord Stanley of Preston, the man who donated the Stanley Cup to hockey as Governor General of Canada. The then Earl of Derby is pictured on the cover of an issue of the June 17, 1896 edition of the Racing Illustrated magazine. A vertical crease running through the middle of the 14” x 9 1/2" does very little to diminish the display of this historic 115-year-old magazine cover featuring a finely detailed photo portrait of the former Governor General. The magazine is whole and complete and has been nicely preserved overall considering its vintage. A brief biography of Lord Stanley is featured within its pages. The future Governor General is pictured 15 years prior to donating the Cup in a portrait that appears in an 8x7 oval with the caption “The Right Hon. Colonel F.A. Stanley, M.P., The New Secretary For War” beneath it on a 15 1/2" x 10 1/2" full page from the April 20, 1878 edition of The Illustrated London News. A crease through the bottom edge is to note from the fold in the middle of the page, which has another brief Lord Stanley bio on the other side. Completing the lot is a 3x2 picture of “Baron Stanley of Preston 1888-1893” which appears among three more of “Canada’s Governor-Generals” from the same era on a 9 1/2" x 6 1/4" removed from a book.
