Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011

One of the best two-way defensemen of his era, Sylvio Mantha enjoyed plenty of individual and team success in 14 stellar NHL seasons. He spent most of his big-league tenure with the Montreal Canadiens, with whom he was an important component of three Stanley Cup teams. After retiring from a lengthy National Hockey League career, Hall of Fame member Sylvio Mantha tried his hand as a linesman and referee in the American Hockey League and the NHL. However, the grueling travel schedule of an on-ice official proved to be too much and Mantha decided to stay in Montreal and ply his trade as an amateur coach. Offered is Mantha's creamy wool National Hockey League referee uniform top, with black and orange trim at the v-neck. Orange embroidery decorates the black felt NHL shield crest that has been sewn onto the left breast. The sweater has been extremely-well preserved and only shows a few material pulls and two small holes on the lower back. Many wool jersey examples from the period are littered with moth holes but this one was properly stored, cared for and was spared the ravages of time. Complete with a letter of authenticity, the important and early wool official's sweater was originally obtained from Mantha's son. Please note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
