Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011

John Ferguson played a solid physical game and was more then willing to drop his gloves and engage in the pugilistic side of hockey. But there was a lot more to Ferguson then just brawn. He scored 15 or more goals in four of his first five seasons, then turned many heads by firing home 29 goals during the 1968-69 season. With Ferguson providing the missing ingredient of toughness, the team returned to glory and captured five Cups during his eight-year career with them, including one in 1971, when he played his last game. Ferguson added 10 points to his team's efforts over that 1970-71 post-season, the best playoff totals of his career. Offered is John Ferguson's last Montreal Canadiens uniform, worn during the 1970-71 season and throughout the playoffs, finishing in Stanley Cup victory. Tagged in the collar by Wilson with the unmarked size box, this terrific tie-neck style holds the original lace in the neck. Ferguson's two-tone alternates captain's "A" rests on the left breast just above the tri-color tackle twill Habs CH crest. The pre-name-on-back style sports double-layer number "22" on the back and smaller numbers can also be found centered on the arm accent stripes. Inside we find a rusted garter-style fight strap addition and loads of material pilling. Game wear is difficult to spot as most marks washed out easily from these early durenes but we see a few smaller material pulls and scuffs, an unrepaired dime-sized hole at the left elbow, a dark stick mark on the left shoulder and a few smaller stick marks on the front. The numbers and crest show puckering from washing. This spectacular shirt has been conclusively photo-matched to an image of Ferguson celebrating his retirement in the Habs locker room. The photo shows Ferguson hanging up the skates and with this exact shirt hanging nearby. We clearly see distinctive thread patterns on the back up behind the Wilson tag and the hole in the left elbow! Obtained directly from John Ferguson, this historic shirt will come with a letter of authenticity and digital images of the photo-match. [red] Addendum; Further research has shown that the Montreal Canadiens wore a new set of jerseys for the 1971 playoffs and that this jersey would have been worn only during the 1970-71 regular season.[/red]
