Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011

Drop-shadow lettering that cascades down the front of this inaugural season Pittsburgh Penguins uniform is simply classic! The shirt, worn in 1967-68 by Bill Speer is a creamy-white durene tie-neck style uniform tagged in the hem by Gerry Cosby with a nearby size 48 tag and thread remnants where another label was once attached. This highly sought-after style was what the Pens wore into battle during their first year over that expansion season when the National Hockey League doubled in size from six to a full dozen franchises. The shirt appears well-washed and worn with a few material runs, stick marks and a number of smaller unrepaired holes. A few spots of red board paint transfer must also be noted.! The old style garter fight strap in there in the tail. Terrific tie-neck style with the original lace in the neck and dark blue collar trim. A stylish number "17" is sewn onto the back and again on each sleeve in two-tone tackle twill with lighter blue thread making up the third color. A perfect and very scarce first year Penguins uniform! Speer spent two seasons in Pittsburgh and would later see action with the Bruins as part of Boston's Stanley Cup-winning roster in 1970.
