Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
What a pitching staff you'd have with this collection of nine signed baseballs, each of which displays a solitary ballpoint autograph from a Hall of Fame hurler! Four of the greatest left-handers to ever take the mound are represented here with balls signed by Sandy Koufax, Whitey Ford, Steve Carlton and the late Warren Spahn. Your right-handed choices are equally formidable with the likes of the late Bob Feller, 1960s icons Bob Gibson, Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry and newly-minted HOFer Bert Blyleven. Please see our website description for more information about this lot. Our consignor obtained these signatures in the late-1980s on trips to spring training camps as well as at autograph signing shows. Eight of the balls have been signed on the sweet spot by their respective pitching legend; Blyleven’s signature from spring 1989 appears on an AL “Bobby Brown” baseball on the “Rawlings” panel above the league president’s facsimile signature. Gibson, Marichal, and Koufax, whose labels are dated “1988” on their respective ball cases, have signed “Giamatti” NL baseballs, as have Perry, Carlton and Spahn, who died in 2003. Ford, whose case label also reads “1988”, has signed a “Brown” AL ball. The label on Feller’s case notes that the legendary Indians pitcher’s signature on a “Brown” AL ball was collected in 1988 at a card show in Calgary. These autographed baseballs display nice bold signatures and all nine are nicely preserved with very light toning.
