Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
Seven legendary members of the 3,000-hit club are featured in this lot of individually autographed baseballs signed by batters who clearly knew how to get the most out of their swings. Stan Musial, the eighth player to join the club in 1958, is featured along with Pete Rose (13th), Lou Brock (14th), Carl Yastrzemski (15th), George Brett (18th), Tony Gwynn (22nd) and Wade Boggs (23rd) in this select group of the 27 greatest batsmen in major league history. Please see our website description for more information about this lot. Our consignor collected these signatures in the 1988 on trips to spring training camps and at autograph signing shows. Rose, baseball’s controversial all-time hits leader, has signed on the sweet spot as have the six others, who are all members of the Hall of Fame. Musial, Brock, Yaz and Rose were already members of the 3,000-hit club and retired when their signatures were collected. Brett collected his 3,000th hit five seasons later on September 30, 1992. Gwynn and Boggs joined the exclusive club when they delivered their resepective milestone hits on consecutive days in August 1999. Yaz, Brett and Boggs have all signed AL “Bobby Brown” baseballs. Musial, Brock, Gwynn and Rose have signed NL baseballs bearing the facsimile signature of the late A. Bartlett Giamatti. The league president when Rose signed his ball, Giamatti was baseball’s commissioner the following year when he engineered the deal that saw Rose accept a voluntary lifetime ban from the game. Giamatti died eight days later of a heart attack. The six HOFers baseballs all display nice bold signatures and have been nicely preserved. Rose’s signature is fainter though clearly legible and his autographed baseball is the only one of the lot to display significant toning.
