Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
Boom! These seven signed baseballs each bear an individual ballpoint autograph from a member of the 500 home run club, including all-time greats Hank Aaron and Willie Mays! Hall of Famers all, the late Ted Williams and recently deceased Harmon Killebrew are also featured here along with Ernie Banks, Willie McCovey and Mike Schmidt. These seven sluggers combined to hit a total of 4,090 regular season homers between them, led by Aaron's 755 and Mays' 660. Please see our website description for more information about this lot. Our consignor obtained most of these signed baseballs in the late 1980s on trips to spring training camps and some in autograph signing shows. The label on the case of Schmidt’s signed baseball is dated 1987, which is the year that the Phillies slugger joined the 500 home run club. The labels of the six other balls are dated 1988, with a Scottsdale notation, the location of the Giants’ spring training camp, on McCovey’s case. All seven balls are autographed in ballpoint on the sweet spot. Aaron, who hit his final 22 home runs with the Milwaukee Brewers, has signed a “Bobby Brown” AL baseball, as have Williams and Killebrew, while Mays, Banks, Schmidt and McCovey have signed “Giamatti” NL balls. The balls display bold signatures and are nicely preserved and remain strikingly white, save for the McCovey autographed baseball which is browned from significant toning.
