Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
Interesting trio of CFL footballs date back to the 1970s and a classic Spalding J5V Jake Gaudaur model that had one panel beautifully hand-painted to commemorate Montreal Alouette placekicker Don Sweet’s record of 21 consecutive field goals, set during the 1976 campaign. Sweet used a bold thick black marker to write: “To Mike – Keep in a safe place – your friend Don Sweet #11.” Ball has been preserved in outstanding condition and is joined by a ball used in the 1986 Western semi-finals. The date and the score (“Winnipeg 14 & Lions 21) were added in marker to the ball, which features the facsimile autograph of commissioner Doug Mitchell, along with some after-the-fact use and wear. Meanwhile, a gorgeous big black marker autograph on an official CFL Wilson ball (commissioner Tom Wright facsimile signature) was penned by Geroy Simon, one of the most prolific CFL receivers of all-time. Simon added his “#81”, along with “1750 Rec. Yds 2003!” Football is also in great shape, with Simon a future first ballot Hall-of-Famer.
