Fantastic CFL Montreal Alouettes lot from the personal collection of Pierre Proulx features six big scrapbooks kept by the La Presse newspaper sports editor, filled with French-language clippings of the great 1950s Larks teams. Also included is a 1973 Grey Cup official CFL Spalding J5V football and vintage original artwork for a CFTM TV print ad for Proulx’s football broadcasts which is mounted on a 20” x 15” illustration board. The six 18” x 12” scrapbooks cover each Alouettes season from 1955-60, including the last two of the Als’ three straight Grey Cup appearances in the middle of the decade, all of which ended in losses to the Edmonton Eskimos. Sam The Rifle Etcheverry is pictured in the background of one of a total of five 1950s Als football scenes featured in five loose 8x10 prints, two of which are stamped “Real St. Jean, Photographe”, along with a 1958 wire photo of Tiger-Cats Hall of Famer Bernie Faloney. The 1956 scrapbook features three vintage photo prints on facing pages, including a 10x7 shot of two Eskimos grasping the Grey Cup and a huge 11x14 print of an action scene from the game, featuring a referee signaling a touchdown. Muddied members of the 1957 East All-Stars are featured in an 8x10 pasted within the pages of the 1957 album. All six scrapbooks are filled with clippings of game stories, features, standings, statistics, photos, an Als/CFL historian’s wish list from the mid- to late-1950s! A plaque on the wood base of the “Grey cup 1973 Toronto” football originally presented to Proulx indicates in French that it is from the CFL to commemorate the journalist’s 25 years of service to the game.
