Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
Canada’s national football championship is featured in this lot of three vintage editions of Toronto’s The Globe newspaper from the first half of the 20th century. Featured is the Monday, November 30, 1908 edition of The Globe which features a picture of the “Hamilton Tigers, Champions of Canada” below the fold at the bottom of the front page. That was the year before the Grey Cup was first awarded. Also included are issues of The Globe with 1927 and 1934 Grey Cup coverage. The Monday, November 28, 1927 newspaper has accounts and photos from Toronto Balmy Beach’s 9-6 win over the Tigers at Varsity Stadium. The Saturday, November 24, 1934 edition of The Globe features setup stories for that afternoon’s Grey Cup game, a 20-12 win for the Sarnia Imperials over the Regina Roughriders, also at Varsity Stadium. These full-edition newspapers are in delicate condition, all three have extremely brittle edges to note. Fascinating pieces of Canadian football history.
