Mighty cool to hold and check out are these shoulder pads donned by Edmonton defensive end Rollin Prather in the Eskimos' exciting 1954 Grey Cup victory (26-25) over the Montreal Alouettes. A letter from the assistant equipment manager at the time, to be included, states that Prather (out of Kansas State) used the pads in the regular season as well and gifted them to him after the big game. "Gold Smith" pads have "45"s stencilled on the inner and outer padding, show nice game use and appear all original. Prather was involved in the famous play that led to Jackie Parker's winning touchdown, with details on our website. Initially a two-way end when he joined the Eskimos in 1950, Prather was used almost exclusively on defense during his last two seasons (1953, '54) and as mentioned, had a role in the famous Chuck Hunsinger fumble and TD return by Jackie Parker. As Hunsinger cut to his left, it was Prather and linebacker Ted Tully who were closing in on him to make the tackle when the fumble (or incomplete pass according to Montreal) occurred and Parker scooped it up and went for the TD that tied the game and was won on the Bob Dean convert. Prather was a second team West All-Star at offensive end in 1950 and 1951, and a first team selection at offensive end in 1952.
