Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011

A sprawling Bill Barilko netted the overtime game winner that captured the Stanley Cup for the Leafs at the close of the 1950-51 season. Barilko would never play another game as he disappeared soon after while on a fishing trip. As the story of the Barilko curse goes, the team did not win another championship until 1962, the year Bill's body was discovered in the wreckage of his airplane. This astonishing find marks the moment from a seldom-seen angle. We are all familiar with the group shot of the goal taken from the opposite side of the ice that turns up whenever the even is shown in documentaries and print. This angle captures Barilko's face as he realizes he has scored and also the visage of the defeated Maurice Richard of the Montreal Canadiens. This vintage photograph was obtained from long-time Leafs trainer Tommy Naylor and measures 8" x 10", having been professionally matted and framed significantly larger for a darling display.
