Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011

This head-scratcher is a testament to the frugality of the Chicago Black Hawks management. Jimmy Waite, the longtime NHL netminder, came to the Hawks after being selected 8th overall in the 1987 draft. He first saw action in the 1988-89 season but only wore the number 60 in 1989-90. This old 1970s-era dureen sports Waite's surname and number 60 on the back. The lettering is attached to a later-style knit name bar, correct for the 1989-90 period and there appears to be evidence of a number change. We surmise that the old Wilson-tagged dureen was hauled up from the basement to be worn by Waite on the off-chance he would be needed between the pipes, and he only saw action in 4 games that year. The obvious game wear, with six team repairs, would most certainly have been added back in the '70s.
