Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011

Highly sought signature of Hall-of-Fame goaltender Alex Connell was penned across the bottom of this vintage black and white 7x9" photograph portraying Connell in his striped Ottawa Senators sweater. Connell is best known for his incredible record of six consecutive shutouts while with the Ottawa Senators in the 1920s. Also known for his trademark small black cap that he wore while tending goal, he ended a short retirement and helped the Montreal Maroons win the Stanley Cup in 1935. Bold fountain pen signature falls into the "can't-hope-for-nicer" category and is dedicated "To Jim" referring to fellow HOFer Jim Hendy of Hendy Guides fame. As a treat, Hendy signed the reverse of the photo in pencil! Connell died in 1958, the same year that he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. The photo is in great shape with slightly-trimmed corners and the autograph is bold and beautiful.
