Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
Created as an amateur team in hopes of competing for the Allan Cup, the Calgary Tigers helped form the Western Canada Hockey League in 1921 to become the first major professional team in Calgary. In 1924, after winning both the league and Western Canadian championships, the Tigers became the first Calgary based club to compete for the Stanley Cup. This historic sheet is a player contract from the Big Five Hockey League, dated November 30th, 1921, between Charlie Reid and the Calgary Hockey Club. The lengthy document details the sum of $1000 to be paid to Reid for the season as a member of Calgary's squad. Reid, a goaltender who passed away in 1953, has signed at the bottom along with Fred Johnson for the Tigers. Also included in the collection is a Paulin's Candy hockey card from the V128 set, picturing Reid in his WCHL Tigers attire. Slabbed and graded by PSA, the card has attained a grade of VG 3. The ancient goalie leg pads that come with the grouping were attributed to Charlie Reid, according to our consignor who obtained them from a long-time Saskatoon collector. The pads are thin, with horsehair backing and vintage leather strapping. They appear to be quite similar in style to the ones Reid is shown wearing in his Paulin's card and, although they have a faint marker name across one roll that is not Reid's and was most likely added decades later, they most certainly date back to the 1920's.
