Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
The Victoria Cougars professional hockey club has a storied history. Winning the Stanley Cup in 1925 over the Canadiens and finishing as finalists the following year, the city would then have to wait until 1949 before the team was resurrected in the Pacific Coast Hockey League. They would win the PCHL Championship in 1950-51 with Jerry Napolean Cotnoir as their number one goaltender. We present the very #1 jersey worn by Jerry Cotnoir in that championship season. An outstanding combination of wool, cresting and colour, with a Cougars crest in a sensational design with the Cougar in the ring overlapping the large "V" for Victoria. The red jersey with white and blue trim is indicative of the fact they were a Western farm team for the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL. The heavy-felt player numeral is situated on both the front left chest and back of the jersey, one of the first known examples of this style of placing the players' number on the front chest area. Cotnoir played for the Victoria Cougars in 1950-51 and 1951-52 and his tie-neck wool sweater displays two wool-darned team repairs and a number of smaller unrepaired holes, typical on examples from the era. [red]Addendum; Please note that the vintage goalie gloves photographed with the jersey as shown in our printed auction catalogue are NOT offered with the jersey, this auction and offering is strictly for this fantastic vintage PCHL Victoria Cougars jersey.
