Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
Extremely rare and historic piece is a Patrick Roy game mask from 1995-96, the season he was dealt to Colorado and helped lead the Avalanche to their first Stanley Cup. Goalie equipment guru Michel Lefebvre hand made this mask and cage for Patrick, who was shockingly traded to the former Quebec Nordiques in December 1995 by the Montreal Canadiens. The custom paint job is by Guy Lafrance, who painted most of the Hall of Fame goalie's Avalanche masks and has dated "'96" the signature he incorporated into the artwork on the left side of the chin. The Avs went 31-18-4 after Patrick joined them to finish first in the Pacific Division. In the playoffs, he helped Colorado battle through six-game wins over Vancouver, Chicago and Detroit to reach the finals. The Avs reeled off three straight wins against the upstart Florida Panthers in the final but needed Patrick to deliver his third shutout of the playoffs to secure the Cup with a 1-0 win in triple overtime. This mask from a Stanley Cup season is identical to the one worn by Patrick during his debut campaign with the Avalanche, though it never saw game use. It was gifted to our consignor by Lefebvre, who provided an LOA that accompanies the mask. The web of five elasticized straps all have custom-taped tips to prevent slippage through the plastic buckles. Included is the Koho zipper closure mask bag with "P. Roy" embroidered on the front in black thread and "Game" written in black marker above the Koho by Lefevre Pro Series label sewn on the back. A Patrick Roy game mask is very seldom offered for sale so take advantage of this incredibly scarce opportunity!
