Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
The National Hockey League award that bears hockey Hall-of-Famer Lester Patrick's name first presented in 1966 by the New York Rangers and is presented annually for "outstanding service to hockey in the United States". This amazing bronze statue is the original art used to create the miniature individual trophies presented to each year's recipient. Identical in size to the current awards given out each season, but much heavier. This vintage bronze is crafted in higher relief and greater detail than the statues of today. Patrick reaches out his left arm here, just as he does on the larger master trophy which has the HOF builder holding a hockey stick, not present on the bronze. Bronze hockey statues are extremely rare and valuable in any form, much less one that is the original design of a famous National Hockey League award. The sculpture stands over 9" in height and is in excellent condition with a lovely green patina. The base is etched by the artist, "Joe Brown" and dated "1965". Noted sculptor Joe Brown sculptor was a professor in sculpture art at Princeton University, and many of his bronze athletes are on display in Philadelphia including in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. Brown won a number of national awards including the National Academy of Design's Barnet Prize for Sculpture.
