Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
Fascinating piece of Detroit Red Wings history is this team-signed stick from the early 1940s that was likely used by Syd Howe. The Wings' great signed along with fellow HOFers Sid Abel, Jack Stewart and Ebbie Goodfellow among the 14 faint pencil signatures along the shaft of this vintage gamer, which stills displays remnants of the green CCM label on one side just above the heel. The number "8" Howe wore throughout his career with the Red Wings is stamped on the front of the shaft below his original black tape knob. The stick dates from either 1940-41 or the following season, when Howe was the team's leading scorer and the Wings were perennial Cup finalists. The blade has a broken piece under the vintage tape job, which was a common practice during the war era when you got the most out of everything until it was unusable. Please see our website description for more information. Moving from the top down along the shaft the stick are signatures by Joe Fisher, Johnny Mowers, Abel, Stewart, Gus Giesebrecht, followed by one that is too pale to make out, Goodfellow, Alex Motter, Mud Bruneteau, Bob Whitelaw, Eddie Wares, Carl Liscombe, Howe and Bill Jennings.
