Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011

Mark Messier, who will go down in hockey history as one of the greatest leaders of all time, forged his reputation during the memorable championship runs in Edmonton and an exciting season in 1994, which fans in New York will never forget. Messier put up huge stats throughout his career, earning membership in the 500-Goal Club and hockey's Hall of Fame in Toronto. On October 4, 1991, in one of many cost-cutting moves by Edmonton management, Messier was traded to the New York Rangers for Louie DeBrusk, Bernie Nicholls and Steven Rice. Messier hit the ground running in New York, registering a 35-goal and 107-point performance. This white mesh gamer, worn by Messier in 1991-92, his first of many years on Broadway, features the NHL 75th anniversary patch and its original Gerry Cosby neck tag and CCM fly tag with a smaller size 54 tag folded just below. Mark's leadership is represented in the two-tone captain's "C" that adorns the left breast just across from the league's commemorative patch. The blue and red tackle twill number 11 appears on the back and again on each upper arm and individual blue and red twill letters spelling out "MESSIER" are sewn directly onto the jersey. The heavy snap-style fight strap is intact and sewn into the tail near the embroidered CCM logo and NHL shield crest. Game wear is fantastic with dozens of stick marks and swipes on the lower front, more marks and four team repairs on the right sleeve and similar stick work over on the opposite arm. Two large repairs turn up on the front including one that fixes a tear between two letters of the cascading team identifier. A lengthy and bold stick mark just below the letter E on the front has been conclusively photo-matched to an action shot that will accompany the lot! Rangers president and GM Neil Smith has signed a letter of authenticity on team letterhead, adding: "This authentic Rangers jersey was worn by Mark Messier during the 1991-92 season" and noting that the proceeds from the sale of the shirt was donated to the National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse.
