Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
A fascinating look at the old business side of hockey is offered through this remarkable collection of correspondence between Tim Horton and Conn Smythe, including a handwritten letter signed by the late, great Maple Leafs defenseman. In his letter to Smythe dated July 17, 1953, Horton asks for a $1,000 advance on his salary from the upcoming season to pay for furniture for his new house. The letter is written and signed in blue ink by Horton on two portions of an 8x10 sheet that he folded in the middle. It is date-stamped "Recd Jul 30 1953" by Smythe's office. A Maple Leafs office copy of Smythe's typed reply, dated the same day, notifies Horton that he would arrange the advance even though the request "is entirely contrary to our policy." Pencil notation at the bottom of the 10 1/2 x 8 1/2 page indicates the advance was paid in August and repaid over the course of the 1953-54 season at the rate of "$100 per pay."
