Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011

This superb Maurice Richard game-used stick signed twice by the Rocket has a great story to tell. The legendary Habs icon gifted this prized stick to Bob Bowman, a member of the Woodstock Athletics who scored one of the Ontario senior "B" squad's three goals in an exhibition game against the Montreal Canadiens in December 1953. Bowman put one past Gerry McNeil and Richard tallied twice in the third period of the defending Stanley Cup champions' 20-3 win before signing this stick and handing it over to the eternally grateful senior player, who kept it as a prized possession. The Rocket's original tape jobs on the knob and blade remain intact and both Richard signatures appear on the front of the shaft, including his original 1953 pencil autograph. Please see our website description for more information about this amazing Maurice Richard game-used stick and its provenance. This amazing CCM “Pattern Made” gamer has “Richard” and his legendary number “9” stamped on the front of the shaft, and “Raymond Hardward Ltd. Sporting Goods” on the other side of the shaft. Richard added his number 9 to the modern black marker signature he placed to the right of the vintage pencil autograph he applied to the stick in 1953, which has traces of lacquer placed over it. The Ontario senior “B” squad’s three goal scorers are pictured along with the Rocket and Habs captain Emile “Butch” Bouchard in a newspaper clipping in the wake of their 20-3 drubbing at the hands of the defending Stanley Cup champions. You couldn’t ask for a better example of a game-used stick from this era, with black marks on the shaft and heel, and just the smallest amount of wood separation that is so common on sticks of this vintage on the toe and on the top edge of the blade where it attaches to the bottom of the shaft. A few pinholes on the blade do not diminish the display of this incredible Rocket Richard gamer which comes with clippings of the 1953 box score, game story and the post-game photo that includes Richard and Bowman.
