Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
The legendary Howie Morenz and fellow Montreal Canadiens greats George Hainsworth, Aurele Joliat and Sylvio Mantha are among the signatures on this team-signed circa 1930 stick. Habs coach Cecil Hart and owners Leo Dandurand and Joseph Cattarinich are among the other signatures on this fantastic artifact that dates from the period of the franchise's first back-to-back Stanley Cup wins in 1929-30 and 1930-31. Also included is a colorized Frontenac team photo of the 1930-31 team. Mounted in a 16" x 33" black frame, the photo was modified so that the upper and lower portions of the iconic Rice Studios panoramic image were painted/drawn over to cover all of the Frontenac advertising references. Please see our website description for more information about this lot. Morenz signed low on the stick, to the right of Marty Burke, below the single band of black tape around the shaft. Dandurand placed a large autograph high on the shaft, to the right of the signatures of Wasnie and Lesieur. Joliat signed below Joliat, followed by Cattarinich with Mondou beneath it, then Hart and Lepine. Hainsworth signed further down followed by Odie Cleghorn, who was a referee by that point;
“Sports” is stamped low on the shaft along with a City Hall Ave. address in Montreal followed by “Hand Made Special”;
A variety of signatures appear on the other side of the shaft, likely minor hockey players of the era;
Roughly 12” x 29” of the 1930-31 team picture is displayed within a white matte.
