Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2011

Tantalizing and downright rare is this opportunity to acquire a complete Blue Ribbon football card set with the ultra-scarce accompanying album, a scenario that should have longtime pursuers of vintage Canadian Football League material somewhat in awe. The 1954 “tall-boy” issue was the first football card set to use color images, which were actually colorized versions of the original black and white photos supplied by the participating teams and as author Andy Malycky writes in “Collecting Canadian Football,” is the crown jewel of vintage Canadian football sets, thanks in part to the presence of many stars and Hall-of-Famers. Long thought to have been available in boxes of Blue Ribbon Tea, the cards were actually issued inside of Blue Ribbon Milk Chocolate candy bars. Keys are the rookie cards of Winnipeg Blue Bomber Bud Grant (crease-free EX to EX+ but off-center), Edmonton’s Jackie Parker (light horizontal crease and VG+), Edmonton’s Bernie Faloney (EX+ to EX-MT) and Calgary’s John Bright (VG-EX), along with #68-Sam Etcheverry (EX). Other mentionable cards are #9-Gerry James RC (VG-EX), 23-Kaye Vaughn RC (VG) and the first (VG-EX) and last (EX) cards. The remainder of the 80-card ensemble features (32) that we see as solid EX examples, with some of those making it to EX+. Another 37 fall into the VG, VG+ and VG-EX grades with only two lesser (stained) cards; 14-Thomas and 67-Tex Coulter. Meanwhile, swell colors are featured on the cover of the seldom-seen Blue Ribbon album. It features blank black photo album pages with scotch tape stains revealing it once was the home to cards, but not these! We grade the album covers as VG-EX and have had a blast perusing these wonderful CFL treasures – a cornerstone of a Hall of Fame-caliber Canadian football card collection.
