Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/29/2011
This single-game Team Canada 2010 Olympics game-worn jersey is golden, identical in look to the ones worn by Sidney Crosby and company
for the host nation’s stirring final victory over the United States in Vancouver. Martin Brodeur’s photo-matched Olympic gamer offered
here is from the set worn by Team Canada for its round-robin game against Switzerland on February 18. Marty, who led Canada to Olympic
gold in 2002 in Salt Lake City, gave up a 2-0 lead as the Swiss battled back to tie the game. Overtime solved nothing and the NHL’s
all-time wins and shutouts leader shined in the shootout, turning aside four straight Swiss attempts. That set the stage for Sid the
Kid deliver the decisive shootout goal in a 3-2 win at Canada Hockey Place. The centerpiece of these Nike jerseys is the team crest
Canada introduced exclusively for the Olympic tournament. Because the International Olympic Committee enforced its rule forbidding the
use of national federation logos, Hockey Canada commissioned a Musqueam artist to develop a suitable alternative. The thunderbird and
eagle and the heralded hockey player and stick are among several icons and cultural symbols that are depicted on the red twill fabric
in the middle of the Maple Leaf crest, which is outlined in white embroidery accented by gold thread. The advanced polyester/spandex
fabric used in these white-and-red gamers makes for a remarkably lightweight jersey. This Brodeur Olympic gamer has been matched to
photos from the February 18 game by two black marks on the bottom right corner of the crest on the front, a long horizontal mark
directly above the letters “DA” in “Canada” and another smaller mark above it in the bottom right point of the maple leaf. The Nike
logo, size “58” and “Made In Canada” are printed in the back of the collar. A “G” for goalie-cut fly tag sits on the bottom of the
sewn-on IIHF tag. Nike’s inventory bar code is heat-pressed into the inner rear hem. Inside the jersey, a small Hockey Canada logo
patch is sewn behind the Canada crest. The Canadian Olympic Committee logo is embroidered on a patch sewn onto the right rear tail and
a Vancouver 2010 patch is sewn onto the left sleeve. A red Nike logo is sewn on the right breast. Sewn-on double twill numbers are
red-and-black on the back and white-and-black on both sleeves. White twill surname letters are glued onto a sewn-on nameplate. The
fight strap is intact and a long laundry instruction fly tag is sewn into the inside of the left seam. In addition to the photo-match
marks, more game use shows in a few more black marks below those on the front tail, as well as a small black marks on the right sleeve
and a couple of tiny black marks on the left sleeve. The top nylon thread of the upper seam on the left side of the hem on the rear
tail is pulled and hangs loose. Comes with a Hockey Canada letter of authenticity signed by president Bob Nicholson. [red] Addendum; A security feature is embedded into all Olympic jerseys by Hockey Canada. Hockey Canada doesn't disclose the process, only that if there is ever any question of authenticity by a holder of a Team Canada game-used jersey in the future, they can have Hockey Canada confirm upon supplying the physical jersey for inspection.
