Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011

A wonderful piece of Canadiana featuring a Canadian legend is this collage of the 1944 Hamilton Wildcats football team. Joe "King" Krol, arguably the most versatile player in Canadian football history, is pictured in the middle, just to the left of coach J.E. McLean. Playing both ways, Krol had led the Wildcats to the 1943 Grey Cup championship and the ORFU champion Hamilton squad returned to the title game in '44, being edged 7-6 by the St. Hyacinthe-Donnacona Navy. Krol would go on to key five Toronto Argonauts' Grey Cup titles, earning induction into the Canadian Football and Sports Halls of Fame. Framed to 12" by 14-1/2, the photo by Hamilton's Perc Powell appears near mint with no visible flaws.
