Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/29/2011
Striking vintage pocket watch attributed to one of the greatest hockey minds ever, Arthur Ross. Regarded as one of the best defenders of his era by his peers, Art was one of the first to skate with the puck up the ice rather than pass it to a forward. This "South Pole" gold timepiece by Empress is engraved on the outer back "Presented by Art Ross to L.F. Flanagan" and a peek inside uncovers more script reading "SAAA Champions 1914 MC & DBB League" with various small hand engraved text of the repairs done on the watch over the years. Art Ross sponsored various sport leagues with his sporting equipment store in Montreal in the 1910s and this is most likely a seldom-seen baseball-related award sponsored by his store. It must be noted that the watch is not in working condition, and although is likely that it could be restored to running order, it remains a classic and impressive display, once handled and gifted by an early and important member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
