Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/29/2011
Exceptional vintage postcard of the Kenora Thistles, the early 20th Century amateur hockey club which challenged for and won the Stanley Cup in 1907. With a population of 4,000, the Ontario town of Kenora - once known as Rat Portage - holds the distinction of being the smallest community to ever claim the Cup. Postcard picturing members of the "Thistle Hockey Club, Champions of Manitoba League, Kenora, Ont." is dated "Jan. 22/07", the day after the Thistles completed a two-game sweep of the reigning champion Montreal Wanderers to win their total-goals Cup challenge. HOFers pictured here include Silas (Si) Griffis and team captain Tommy Phillips in the foreground, along with Tom Hooper (middle) and Billy McGimsie (back right) are also HOFers. Stirring postcard is VG-EX with a vertical crease.
