The Detroit Red Wings were on a mission in the 1998 Stanley Cup playoffs as they sought to defend their title despite the tragic absence of defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov. The Wings returned to the finals for the third time in four years, and went on to sweep aside Washington in four straight. Detroit’s second straight Cup win touched off an emotional on-ice celebration that saw captain Steve Yzerman present the Cup to Konstantinov, who was confined to a wheelchair after a limousine accident the previous spring nearly cost him his life. Offered here is a lot 61 NHL official game pucks from the 1998 playoffs including 35 of the distinctive “Head to Head” logo used for the final, with Red Wings and Capitals logos over the helmets of two players squared off face to face. The logo is surrounded by a white ring with “1998” and the top and “Stanley Cup Finals” along the bottom. The other 26 pucks feature the 1998 Stanley Cup playoffs logo screened on the face, also surrounded by a white ring with “1998” on top and “Stanley Cup” at the bottom. The reverse of all 61 pucks has “Official Game Puck” in black letters on the top of the orange ring with “In Glas Co” at the bottom. The NHL shield is in the middle along with commissioner Gary Bettman’s facsimile signature. The pucks have “In Glas Co” between NHL shields on the edge along with “Made in Canada” and “Official”, all in raised letters. All of the pucks come with their original round “NHL Official Game Puck” cardboard boxes which feature a label on the top white plastic lid with a black-and-white rendition of the logo screened on the face of the puck.
