Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/29/2011
The NHL honored the 100th anniversary of the Stanley Cup throughout the 1992-93 season with a special commemorative logo. This “Stanley Cup 1893-1993” logo was worn as a patch on every team’s jersey during the season. It was also screened on the face of all of the NHL official game pucks used throughout the league in a season marked by Mario Lemieux’s heroic battle with cancer, Wayne Gretzky’s return to the Stanley Cup final and the Montreal Canadiens’ 24th Cup win. Offered here is a massive stash of 164 of these In Glas Co game pucks. The NHL crest sits high in the orange circle screened on the reverse with “Official Game Puck” spelled out in black along the top edge and “In Glas Co” along the bottom. Three variations are featured, 156 of which have two alternate versions of outgoing NHL president Gil Stein’s facsimile signature while 8 more bear the facsimile autograph of Gary Bettman, who replaced him as the league’s first commissioner. These Stanley Cup 100th anniversary pucks feature 97 in their original plastic packaging. Of these, 89 are packaged with the “Mise Au Jeu Authentic Collection” label, including 74 signed “Gil Stein” below the NHL shield on the reverse and 15 displaying the “Gilbert Stein” facsimile signature. Most of the packages are intact though the now-brittle plastic edges of some have cracked and broken off. Eight more pucks with the “Gary B. Bettman” signature of the new NHL commissioner are in clear plastic packaging with no label. Another 67 loose pucks all bear the “Gilbert Stein” facsimile signature.
