Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/29/2011
Dandy ensemble features two pairs of vintage skates which go way back to the late 1800s and the days of folks strapping their boots onto wooden platforms and blades at the local frozen pond. The larger set features sleek platforms with "16" etched on the flat-top wood at the arch of each skate and long steel blades attached to the bottom. Mounting screws at the heel and towards the front of the platform are present along with a pair of tack attachments. "Union Hardware Co., The Donohue Racing Skate, Torrington, Conn." is stamped on each of the 16 1/4" long steel blades. The smaller set included in this lot have shorter flat-topped wood platforms and 11" long curled steel blades, which display oxidation that hardly distract from the stenciled pattern along one side. This pair measures 12 1/2" overall in length. Mounting screws and tacks are intact. One skate has both of its now-dried and cracking leather straps while the other's are missing. All in all an excellent pair of examples of antique ice skates.
