The heavily-favored Team Canada squad that showed up for the 1996 World Cup of Hockey was overflowing with National Hockey League talent. Gretzky, Messier, Coffey, Shanahan, Lindros, Brodeur, Graves, Fleury, Sakic… they were all there. Off to a great start with wins over Russia, Slovakia, and Germany, the boys seemed to only have difficulty when they took on those pesky Americans, losing to USA by a score of 5-3 on August 31st. A close game against Sweden in the semi-finals would see Canada move on to face Team USA once more. Canada took the first match in the best-of-three final, in Philadelphia, 4-3 in overtime. Then the USA recorded a memorable pair of 5-2 victories in Montreal to win the series. In the third and decisive game, the US received spectacular goaltending from tournament MVP Mike Richter and rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the third period by scoring four goals in the final 3:18 of the game.
Offered is the white set of uniforms worn by members of Team Canada for the games of the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. This set was worn for a single game in the series, played on September 7th, 1996 against Sweden in a hard-fought 3-2 victory for Canada. The jerseys were also worn in one of the two pre-tournament exhibition match-ups against the Americans played on August 20th in Vancouver and August 21st in San Jose, California. According to those who attended the exhibition games, they were intense, on-ice battles that foreshadowed what would come in the Finals. Each white Bauer airknit is tagged by the maker in the collar with a size tag nearby and the company logo sewn up on the right breast. Best is the circular World Cup of Hockey crest on the chest. All crests, numbers and nameplate lettering are sewn-on and the Bauer inventory control tag is heat-pressed into the tail. Each jersey will come complete with a letter of authenticity from the NHLPA.
Mark "The Moose" Messier answered the call once more in 1996 to join the best of Canada's on-ice talent as the team took on the rest of the globe at the World Cup of Hockey. Messier played in seven of the eight scheduled games and scored once, adding four more assists for a points total of five. A testament to his leadership, the alternate's "A" is proudly displayed on the left breast of his white airknit Team Canada uniform. The number "11" jersey is tagged by Bauer in the neck in size 54" and displays nice game use. About 20 black stick marks appear on the left arm with about 6 marks and scuffs on the other sleeve. More marks can be found on the lower front along with some areas of red staining and a peek at the back uncovers a few addition stick marks.
