Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/29/2011
An ultra-intriguing find is this sports card featuring Frederick Arthur Stanley, the man who donated hockey's ultimate award, that famous challenge cup that quickly became known as the Stanley Cup. This tobacco card is part of the "Owners and Jockeys" series of 20 cards issued in 1900 by Salmon & Gluckstein and pictures Stanley when he was "Lord Derby." An artist's rendition of Stanley is joined by one of a young jockey named Robinson and the treasure is in crease-free VG-EX condition. Only the second such Lord Derby card we have ever seen or offered, with card dealers in the United Kingdom confirming that it is indeed quite rare. A must-have for a Hall-of-Fame caliber card collection!
