The thought of acquiring well over one thousand autographed hockey cards featuring the stars of the 1980s is one that is sure to excite, with the temptation bound to increase after the juicy details are spelled out. What a fantastic labour of love this collection must have been to assemble over the years. It begins with a complete set of 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee cards, 156 of which have been autographed, 27 of them by Hall-of-Famers. Most notable are the rookie cards of Messier and Bourque, along with three different Gretzkys. An '81-82 OPC set includes 170 signed cards, (29 by HOFers), including the RCs of Coffey, Kurri, Stastny, Savard and Ciccarelli. A whopping 221 cards from a partial '82-83 OPC set and an impressive 289 from a near (388/396) '84-85 OPC set include the signed rookie cards of Fuhr, Francis, Yzerman, Neely, Gilmour, Chelios, Lafontaine and Andreychuk, with a combined total of 75 other cards signed by Hall-of-Famers. There are five different auto'd Gretzky cards from '84-85, along with the Yzerman rookie leader card. A complete 140-card Vachon set featuring the Canadian NHL teams at the time is, get this, just seven cards shy of being completely autographed, with only Carlson, Harris, McCourt, Molin, Palmateer, Poddubny and Tim Young missing sigs. An OPC near set from '85-86 is five cards (including the Lemieux RC) shy of being complete, with 150 autographed, including the MacInnis RC. Finally, a complete '86-87 OPC set features the signed RCs of Patrick Roy, Vanbiesbrouck and Clark, as well as Mario's 2nd year card. Overall, Hall-of-Famers who come around the most often autographed are Gretzky (we count 12 Wayne sigs), Lafleur, Dionne, Robinson, Gainey, Messier and Kurri, with multiples also of Stastny, Bourque, Bossy, MacDonald, Sittler, Gillies, Savard, Shutt, Goulet, Tony O, Gartner, Federko, Langway, Murphy, Hawerchuk and a few others.
