Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/29/2011
Seldom offered pre-war board game is what was available through a mail-in promotion from the Canadian Chewing Gum company, producers of hockey picture cards during the 1933-34 season. The bottom portion of the cards included a letter and anyone cutting off the letters to form the name of any five of the existing nine NHL teams could send them in for one of these games. Endorsed by Foster Hewitt, whose handwriting is reproduced on the box cover, the game includes a 12" by 25" playing surface, dice, two 5-man teams, a wooden puck and a shaker. Remnants of the left side of the original game rules which were pasted to the inside of the game's lid are all that remain, leaving game play up to your imagination. Minor moisture damage at one end of the "rink" is to note, along with splits at the box top corners and warping to the box's cover. Nifty premium/display piece will appeal to a cross-section of vintage collectors.
