Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/29/2011
A sensational find and outstanding complement to Imperial Tobacco's inaugural landmark set of hockey cards is this 100-year old empty Sweet Caporals cigarette box. Considered the earliest hockey card wrapper, the cigarette pack was purchased in recent years with a full set of C56 cards inside and is indeed the correct type of pack/wrapper the cards would have been distributed in back in the day! Each outer side of the two-piece box reads "Manufactured by Imperial Tobacco Company of Canada Limited Under Sole License for Canada." A section of the back of the box is torn but still present. The coveted C56 set featured players from the seven teams which played in the National Hockey Association during the NHA's first season. The 36-card issue was thus full of rookie cards, highlighted by those of Art Ross, Cyclone Taylor, Lester Patrick and Newsy Lalonde. The thought of one of those having been pulled from this very pack is mighty cool. This rarity should really "light it up" as far as the bidding goes!
