Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011

The World Hockey Association renamed its MVP award for the 1975-76 season to honor the legendary Gordie Howe. At the end of the season Quebec's Marc Tardif won his first of two Gordie Howe trophies, a new award that consisted of a tall wood base atop which stood a bronze bust sculpture featuring an incredible likeness of Howe, who was named the WHA's MVP two years earlier. This vintage 1970s alternate version of the league's new MVP trophy featuring a shorter base is topped by a 9" tall bronze bust of Gordie's head and neck. The artist has signed and dated "E. Stark Sievers 1975" on the bottom of the base of the rear of the neck of this hollow but solid and heavy bronze bust. The trophy has an overall height of 17 1/2" with the bronze bust tastefully displayed atop a multi-level wood base. It is unclear whether this was a personal trophy as there is no plaque attached. Nonetheless, this remarkable and historic piece is clearly directly related to the WHA's Gordie Howe Trophy.
