Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/29/2011
Incredible vintage Bobby Hull artwork dates from the 1959-60 season, when the 21-year-old Black Hawks superstar won the first of his three Art Ross trophies as the NHL's scoring leader. This portrait of Hull in his #16 uniform is signed "BROB" in the lower right corner, the trademark of Boston-area caricaturist Bill Robertson whose hockey cartoons decorated the offices at Boston Garden as well as the corridors of the Montreal Forum and Maple Leaf Gardens. Flaming stats at the bottom read "24 goals 25 assists" as Hull went on to record 39 goals and 42 assists for 81 points. "Glarco No. 12" is embossed repeatedly on the left edge of this 14 1/2" x 8" professional illustration board, which has a pinhole at the top and minor handling flaws, including a scuff on the bottom left corner. Hockey historians can enjoy uncovering the publication history of this vintage Hull caricature.
