Spectacular panoramic photo by Toronto's Alexandra Studio pictures the participants of the Ace Bailey benefit game held at Maple Leaf Gardens on February 14, 1934. The game came about after Bailey suffered a life-threatening head injury the previous December in Boston, the result of a vicious and misplaced retaliation check by Bruins defenceman Eddie Shore, who had been hit by Red Horner. Staged by the NHL on behalf of Bailey, whose career had come to a sudden end, the special game pitted the Maple Leafs against an "All-Star" team composed of the best players from the rest of the league. This historic picture was clicked after the NHL stars were presented with their all-star uniforms. Lester Patrick, Frank Calder, Conn Smythe and Dick Irvin are among a who's who of 1930s hockey legends pictured here, including Morenz, Joliat, Stewart, Shore, Conacher and Gardiner for the all-stars. The Leafs, featuring Clancy, Hainsworth, Conacher, Horner, Day, Primeau and Jackson, went on to a 7-3 win. This wondrous photograph, which is stamped "Alexandria Studio" in the bottom right corner, measures approximately 8" x 20" and is displayed in an 8 1/4" x 20 5/8" frame. It is in excellent condition overall, with just a few flaws, notably a couple of surface scratches on the far left side of the print, a crease down from the top edge along the right side, and an inch-long vertical tear atop the referee's left shoulder on the right side. A truly stirring photo from a historic night.
