Perhaps never has a finer man played in the NHL than Syl Apps. A remarkably skilled hockey player, he was big and strong and possessed one of the best shots in the league. He is a member of hockey's Hall-of-Fame and his number was retired in a ceremony at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1993. A gentleman on and off the ice and one of Toronto's most respected and appreciated leaders, Apps helped the Leafs to three Stanley Cup titles during his 10-year NHL career, scoring 201 goals and 432 points in 423 regular season games. Wondrous wool sweater worn by Hockey Hall-of-Famer Syl Apps during the late 1930s to very early '40s. That spectacular 36-point felt Toronto Maple Leafs crest adorns the upper chest with applied cream felt letters spelling out the team name and thin ribbons of stitch forming the veins of the leaf. A double layer felt number "10" can be found on the back side in blue over cream. About 20 smaller holes appear on the front and back and almost all have been closed with vintage darned wool repairs. Blue ribbed knit cuffs end each sleeve and more of the same material forms the round-neck collar. Apps played for Toronto from 1936-37 to 1942-43 and again from 1945-46 through 1947-48. Photo evidence, while examining the crest, dates this example to Apps's earlier stint at Maple Leaf Gardens. The sweater reveals no tagging, which is often the case with uniforms of the period but we assure you that everything is professionally crafted on this marvelous display piece. An important and substantial early wool from a storied franchise!
