Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/29/2011
From the brilliant collection of IIHF Hall-of-Famer Vaclav Nedomansky comes this staggering ensemble of medals captured by the high-scoring star as a member of the Czechoslovakian national squad. The European Ice Hockey Championships would take place each spring, simultaneously with the world championships, with only games between European countries counting towards the outcome of the European championships. Medals are identical to the ones awarded for the worlds, but are smaller, measuring 2-inches in diameter. They begin with the silver the Czechs won in 1965 in Tampere, Finland as Nedomansky debuted as a 21-year old, and run through to the 1974 competition when he led it in scoring and was named to the tournament all-star team, the same year Nedomansky won the IIHF Directorate Best Forward Award. Other silver medals are from 1966 and '68, while gold medals were secured in 1971 and '72. The '72 title is considered one of the most stunning victories in international competition over the perennial champion Soviets. Although the latter won the 1971 world title, the Czechs were crowned European champs due to their better record in games involving European teams, highlighted by a 6-2 trouncing of the Soviets. Bronze medals here total four and are from 1967, '69, '70 and '73. All ten have the same design; a cap-wearing goaltender, "European Championships", the maker's "Huguenin" name and the year on the front, with an "LIHG" logo (Ligue Internationale de Hockey Sur Glace) on the back. There are no visible flaws or wear on any of the pieces; they look to have been preserved in perfect condition, with very light wear to the original boxes. Obtained directly from European legend Vaclav Nedomansky, the remarkable collection will be accompanied by his signed letter of authenticity.
