Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2010

A remarkable piece of Montreal baseball history is this autographed baseball, signed by members of the 1949 Montreal Royals of the International League. The Brooklyn Dodgers' "AAA" farm team for a number of years, the Royals packed them in at Delorimier Stadium and three years earlier allowed Jackie Robinson to break the color barrier. We count 26 signatures on this shellacked ball, and recognize manager Clay Hopper, Jean-Pierre Roy, Sam Jethroe, Rocky Bridges, Gino Cimoli, Turk Lown, Dan Bankhead, Toby Atwell, Bob Morgan, Georges Schmees, Kermit Wahl, Bob Wakefield, Charlie Lare, Johnny Van Cuyk and Ronnie Lee. Now then, Chuck Connors smacked 20 homers for the Royals in '49 and although we cannot confirm his signature, it appears that there is indeed a "Chuck" preceding a surname that could be "Connors', although there is a scrape affecting the "C". A two-inch split near the nearby stitching on that panel is also to note. Dated "1949" and with autographs in the 5-7 range, this rarity deserves an appreciative new home.
