Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2010

Rare is indeed the word to describe this original 1910-11 Sweet Caporal postcard featuring Eugene Payan of the Montreal Canadiens. Vintage postcard was printed in Britain and apparently distributed in a 50-count tin of Sweet Caporal cigarettes. This Eugene Payan card has a clean postcard "back" and is #43 in the next-to-impossible-to-find 45-card set that was reportedly used by the artists working on the C-55 card set released the following season. A cut upper right corner has remants of a vintage tape repair on the reverse. Otherwise, the card is in great crease-free condition with obvious wear in the three other corners, particularly the lower left. A little surface loss of the image on the left side and middle of the bottom edge is also to note. Payan finished third on the 1910-11 Canadiens with 12 goals, behind Hall-of-Famers Newsy Lalonde and Didier Pitre. He had eight goals the following year, second on the team only to Pitre, and totaled 28 goals overall in four seasons with the Canadiens. An early hockey hero on a true cardboard rarity.
