Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/16/2010
More nifty vintage cherished cardboard here with a splendid group of nine hockey players featured in a 60-card multi-sport set issued by Canada's Dominion Chocolate Company of Toronto. The company's second release included 11 hockey players, all members of the Toronto Millionaires, which featured future Toronto Maple Leaf Ken Doraty, known for ending one of the longest games in NHL history with an overtime goal in the sixth overtime period in the 1933 semi-finals against Boston. The Doraty card (EX), like the others offered, still includes its coupon. They were often cut off back in the day and sent in for prizes. Also included is Doug Young, who later played with the NHL Red Wings and Canadiens and who helps determine that this "new" series of 60 cards was actually released during the 1928-29 season and not back in 1926 as had previously been thought. Young only played for the Millionaires in '28-29, as did Al Gauthier (one of the two missing hockey players, along with Don Cameron). Present and looking in EX+ to EX-MT-or-better condition are cards 11-Alex Gray, 12-Dunc Munro and 27-Steve Rice, with 18-Williams and 29-Fisher at VG-EX, 23-Young and 26-Clark at VG and 17-Green at G-VG. This is one dandy lot!
