Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/16/2010
A tantalizing group of extremely scarce cards here features various athletes who were prominent in Canada in the 1920s and were available in packages of confectionery, notably chocolate bars, manufactured by the Dominion Chocolate Company. This is the company's first set, issued in 1924-25 and comprising a whopping 120 cards. The bottom part of each card could be cut-off and full sets of the little coupons could be redeemed for prizes like a hockey puck, football, baseball glove, hockey stick, etc., hence the lack of coupons here. Also including track & field stars, golfers, swimmers, rowers, speed skaters, basketball and lacrosse teams, and other athletes, this near set features, most importantly to us hockey fanatics, 31 of the 32 hockey-related cards. Leading the way is a seldom-seen image of #120-Georges Vezina (F-G), a young 119-Aurele Joliat (G), a hat-wearing 95-Newsy Lalonde (F), 118-Lionel Conacher (F), 69-Hooley Smith (P), 13-Toronto Granites team (VG), 114-Harry Watson (VG), 83-Shorty Green (G) and 117-Odie Gleghorn (VG). Team cards of the Soo Greyhounds (with Bun Cook), North Bay, North Toronto, Peterborough and Owen Sound (juniors) are also special. Famous Canadian sprinters Bobbie Rosenfeld and Rosa Grosse are among the non-hockey notables. Dunc Munro (#57) is the only hockey card missing, along with #s 2, 5, 7, 8, 15, 21, 22, 40, 41, 77 and 101. Condition overall, not taking into account the trimming, ranges from Poor to VG-VG+ and averages out to G. All-in-all, a sensational opportunity to acquire over 100 treasures at once.
