Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/16/2010
An obvious prerequisite to any important vintage hockey card collection is Imperial Tobacco's inaugural issue, the coveted C56 set of 1910-11. Including the biggest stars of the pre-NHL era whose legacies are well known some 100 years later, the near set here is admittedly in low grade, but still respectable for those not looking to break the bank. None of the cards have any back damage and are all thus legible, with however notable paper loss on the front of 8-Art Ross, 22-Riley Hern, 26-Lester Patrick and 10-Harry Hyland. Cyclone Taylor's card #15 displays the nicest among the big names at F-G, while ink soiling considerably affects 12-Art Ross and 36-Newsy Lalonde. The card of Jack Laviolette (#21), the man who assembled the very first Montreal Canadiens squad, has two small aforementioned ink spots in the right border but is otherwise a nice crease-free VG+. The remainder are mostly in the P and F grades, but to be honest, we have seen plenty worse! Needed to fill in the set are #s 1-Patrick, 2-LeSueur, 23-Pitre and 24-Poulin. Featuring several rookie cards that just don't come around all that often, this group will fill a nice hole.
